    On the heels of City Council’s approval of the Greater Downtown Plan, ULI Alberta and the Calgary Downtown Association have gathered a diverse group of city-builders to share their perspectives on the plan, and map next steps.

    Together with Thom Mahler, author of the Greater Downtown Plan - we will examine the strategy; discuss where investments are going, identify gaps in resourcing or commitments, and explore an ecosystem approach to projects and investments that pave the way to re-inventing Calgary’s downtown.

    Greg Guatto

    President & CEO, Aspen Properties

    Since joining Aspen in 2000, Greg has been responsible for the company’s operations with a primary focus on acquisitions, dispositions, financing and asset management. Greg previously worked with TrizecHahn Properties Ltd. and Knowlton Realty Ltd. ​ He received his HBA in Business Administration with Honours from the Ivey Business School at University of Western Ontario in 1990.

    Nicholas Bell

    President and CEO, Glenbow Museum

    Originally from Vancouver, Mr. Bell joined Glenbow in 2019 from his position as Senior Vice President for Curatorial Affairs at Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut. Nicholas launched a formidable exhibitions program during his three years at the preeminent American maritime museum. He previously served as The Fleur and Charles Bresler Curator-in-Charge of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery in Washington, DC, where he led the Renwick’s relaunch, increasing attendance from 150,000 annually to one million. Mr. Bell is also an author and editor of ten books on art, museums, and contemporary culture and offers a proven background in spearheading change and successfully implementing strategic initiatives.

    Susan Thompson

    Research Manager, Avison Young

    Susan, Research Manager for the Calgary office, is a returning member of the Avison Young team. Her continuing work with local, national, and international media as a commentator for the Calgary commercial real estate market has given her recognition within the industry as one of the preeminent sources of information and knowledge for commercial real estate analytics, transaction analysis and office leasing market analysis for Calgary. Prior to her return, she spent over five years with Calgary Economic Development. First as their Business Development Manager specializing in Real Estate, helping companies bringing their business to Calgary navigate the commercial real estate market. Then as their overall Research Manager providing economic analysis and commentary on the Calgary market. After starting her career in assessment, Susan spent over seven years with RealNet Canada, the leading provider of third-party commercial real estate sales information. Working her way up from Research Analyst to Manager for the Calgary office, Susan analyzed thousands of commercial real estate transactions and is extremely knowledgeable about the commercial real estate market in Calgary. Susan also previously spent over four years as the Research Manager for Avison Young’s Calgary office and was responsible for dozens of reports on the Calgary commercial real estate market, covering office, retail and industrial leasing as well as business condominium properties and commercial property sales. Susan has a Bachelor of Commerce degree, with a major in Management Analysis from the University of Alberta. Well recognized in the industry, Susan’s name is often seen in the media as she provides commentary and insight on current commercial real estate topics. Susan’s breadth of knowledge in is an asset to Avison Young.

    Thom Mahler

    Manager Urban Initiatives, City of Calgary

    Thom Mahler is the Manager, Urban Initiatives with the City of Calgary where he is responsible for leading teams and projects in strategic growth areas of the City particularly in the Greater Downtown, priority Main Streets and transit-oriented development areas with a view to delivering development in high value locations. He has previously served in various managerial roles in the City’s planning department where he was responsible for long term planning, development review and land use applications primarily in Calgary’s established inner city communities and Greater Downtown areas. He is also currently serving as the Program Lead for the City’s Downtown Strategy that recently was successful in receiving Council approval of a new Greater Downtown Plan and an initial investment of $200 million toward its implementation. Thom has over 30 years of experience in city planning and has worked in the areas of development review, urban design, policy planning and economic development. In addition to his 20 years of experience with the City of Calgary, he has also practiced in Southwestern Ontario and the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. He holds a Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree from Queen’s University and a Bachelor of Arts, Honours degree in geography from the University of Manitoba.

    James Scott

    Vice President of Planning, PBA Land & Development

    James Scott is VP of Operations at the PBA Group of Companies, where he is responsible for project oversight, strategic land planning, and regulatory approvals on all of PBA Group’s developments. In addition to exterior-facing roles, James manages key internal operations across strategy and change facilitation/management, employee relations and culture, and key operating areas of the business. Prior to his current role, James served as VP of Planning, before taking on operational aspects of the business. In business for more than 55 years, PBA Group owns and operates various properties in Calgary’s Downtown, Eau Claire and Beltline districts, in addition to properties in the Manchester and Fairview Industrial areas. PBA also manages the 545-acre master-planned “Southbow Landing” project in Cochrane. Under its PBA Hotels division, PBA is currently developing the “Dorian” Hotel – a dual-flag 307-room / 27-storey Marriott property in Calgary’s downtown on 5th Avenue between 4th and 5th Streets SW. The Dorian incorporates the first Autograph Collection brand designation awarded by Marriott in the province and will be the first new hotel build in Calgary’s core in decades, set to open early summer 2022. An urban planner by training, James has 30 years of experience in various facets of the land and real estate development sectors, spanning consulting and developer positions. During his 20+ years as a consulting professional, James has managed master-planning, policy development and regulatory approvals, including work on the policy and land use frameworks for Calgary’s East Village. As a Principal and Discipline Leader for Urban Planning at Stantec, James was responsible for planning practices in their Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria offices. He also spent considerable time earlier in his career as a transportation planning consultant. As Manager of Community Planning for Three Sisters Mountain Village in Canmore, James oversaw policy development, master planning, regulatory approvals and community engagement for that project, during development of two major Area Structure Plans and numerous subdivision phases. James is currently serving his second term as a volunteer member of the Calgary Planning Commission and is a committee volunteer with BILD-Calgary Region. James holds a Master of City Planning degree from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.

    Jim Gibson

    If you’re inspired by digital disruption, you know at the core of Calgary’s growing tech ecosystem is Jim Gibson — a connector and catalyst. Passionate, infinitely curious and a serial entrepreneur, Gibson has spent three decades anticipating, adapting and advancing technology trends and challenges. Gibson is the co-founder of Thin Air Labs, which funds early stage, entrepreneur-led technology ventures and networks. In addition to remaining a partner with Thin Air Labs, Gibson is active in the innovation ecosystem. He is a member of The A100, board member of Mikata Health and Beakerhead, an advisor to Alberta Innovates, and a mentor with Venture Mentoring Services of Alberta. With a Management Consultant designation (CMC) along with an MBA in Entrepreneurial Studies and Finance and a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Computer Science, Gibson also understands the business side of innovation and technology advances. Outlined in his recently published and thought-provoking book, Tip of the Spear: Our Species and Technology at a Crossroads, Gibson examines the challenges and the opportunities ahead.

    Todd Hirsh

    Vice President and Chief Economist, ATB

    Todd Hirsch is the Vice President and Chief Economist for ATB Financial. For more than 25 years, he has worked as an economist for organizations including the Canada West Foundation and the Bank of Canada. He is the author of four books. His latest, Spiders in COVID Space: Adapting during and after the pandemic, was released in March 2021. He serves on the boards of Calgary’s Glenbow Museum and the Alberta Ballet. He is also an advisor to the Dean of the Chiu School of Business at Bow Valley College in Calgary. Todd's podcast, titled The Future Of, won a national award in 2021, and was #2 in the top Canadian banking podcasts. He lives in Calgary, Canada on the traditional territory of Treaty Seven, the historic home of First Nations and Métis peoples.

    Sofie Kvist

    Urban Strategist & Designer, Associate , Gehl Studio Inc

    As an Associate and Designer at Gehl, Sofie has a focus on urban strategies, evaluation tools and capacity building, public space design and pilot projects. She works with projects in USA, Canada, South America and Australia for both public and private clients as well as non-governmental organizations. Her educational background as an Urban Designer combined with her experience of working as a Landscape Architect provide Sofie with an ability to connect strategic urban design to physical design at eye-level which is rooted in the user experience.
